Gone is the Day

Black cat calls down the meadow
Blue herring flies away
White dog waits to find a nibble
of what is left on dinner plates
Gone is the day
Now in straight lines lay his timber
A rotted rooftop falls away
Poisonous vines and berries bitter
Climb the barn beneath the paint
Gone is the day
Asleep I lay
Belly full, and money made.
What remains of the old patience pole
Leans ever slowly toward the bank
Of the old over grown watering hole
Where the field horse once drank
Who do I thank?
Watch the treetops sway in rhythm
Hear the luscious noise they make
Bells are rung atop the tower
Boys pull boats out of the lake
Gone is the day
Asleep I lay
Belly full, and money made.
